MyEEE Redesigned

March 1, 2005 by Dana Roode

MyEEE

MyEEE

MyEEE, the opening Web page for course management for faculty has been given a new look, in response to client requests.

Instructors use the EEE system to post course materials and assignments, make resources available, provide assessments, and/or extend class communications and collaborative learning beyond the physical classroom. The system has grown in popularity and useful features since its beginnings in 1995. Recent tools such as Chat, Quiz, and Course Evaluations have now joined the virtual office interface. “EEE has grown to be so full-featured, that we suspected some of the course management tools were being overlooked,” says Max Garrick, lead programmer. The redesign brings essential information to the front, making MyEEE much more effective for instructors.

The layout uses a new multi-module design displaying classes, date, time, location, and prominent links such as Course Web site, and tool links. Account owners may opt to customize their page content or reposition the columns and layout of the modules. The EEE Web site can be found at:

http://eee.uci.edu/

The new MyEEE will be the default setting this spring, but if users are comfortable with the old look, they will be able to switch back to “classic view” until fall quarter 2005.

New Features Sharpen Popular EEE Tools

October 15, 2004 by Dana Roode

UCI’s Electronic Educational Environment (EEE) includes several new enhancements to the Class Mailing List and Mailing List Editor tools.

The Class Mailing List tool provides instructors with an automatically generated, near real-time list, that contains e-mail addresses for all students enrolled in a class. The Mailing List Editor allows instructors to configure their list, add alternate e-mail addresses, add extra e-mail addresses and make other changes.

Previously, instructors would have to wait 24 hours for updates to their Class Mailing List. Now a Class Mailing List reflects adds or drops in just 2 hours. Additions of TAs and other assistants now occur immediately. Other improvements to the Class Mailing List and Editor include:

  • All e-mail is virus scanned
  • Targeted error messages to aid in self-troubleshooting
  • Faster response and delivery
  • New and improved Mailing List Archive look
  • Quarterly Announcement e-mails have been consolidated. Instructors will get one e-mail with all available list addresses (Classes associated later will result in a subsequent e-mail)

The EEE Web development team continues to improve the system based on feedback from students and instructors. For more information on new and upcoming features, see http://eee.uci.edu/news.

EEE Chat Tool

March 26, 2004 by Dana Roode

Among the tools and services for instructional computing on the EEE server is the “Chat” tool. Chat lets you communicate with your students in real-time over the Internet. Some of the ways Chat might be used in instruction are:

  • Hold virtual office hours
  • Run Exam review sessions
  • Form groups of students and practice writing in a foreign language

More information about the chat tool can be found at http://eee.uci.edu/toolbox/chat/

Using Chat requires a valid UCInetID. You will also need to use a Java-enabled computer to enter a Chat room. This may involve downloading and installing Java on your computer. NACS managed instructional and drop-in labs are already enabled. Contact NACS if you need any help with Java.

More information on DropBox can be found at: http://eee.uci.edu/help/dropbox/

  • Instructors — Instructors will see a link to DropBox in the Course Tools section of each class and on the MyMenu toolbar of the MyEEE Web page.
  • Students — Students will see a link to DropBox next to each class that is using a DropBox and on the MyMenu toolbar of the MyEEE Web page.

Should you have any additional questions about Dropbox, or any EEE Tools, please e-mail eee@uci.edu or call x42222.

Introduction to Academic Computing

October 3, 2003 by Dana Roode

NACS and the EEE partners held an orientation program on September 24 for new faculty and their staff.

Presentations by NACS staff covered the range of services NACS provides to faculty and staff. Presentations by staff from the Libraries, the Division of Undergraduate Education, and the Registrar’s office completed the program.

Faculty and presenters also had an opportunity to talk one on one regarding individual needs and opportunities for support.

The powerpoint slides from the NACS presenters are available at http://www.nacs.uci.edu/org/documents/IAC2003-PPT-PresentationSlides.ppt
