New Tools on E3 (EEE)

July 25, 2000 by Dana Roode

E3 made several improvements to its tools and website at the start of spring quarter. Many of the enhancements have come as a direct result of faculty comments and suggestions.

The new “Toolbox” link off the main site gives instructors the ability to access any particular tool directly without having to login through the main site.

An “Edit” feature has been added to SiteManager. Now it is possible to edit the HTML code of any course web page directly on SiteManager. All changes will take place immediately after they are submitted on SiteManager.

New features have been added to Gradebook, making it more versatile and easier to use. Gradebook now supports multiple gradebooks for a given course on a single web page. The Gradebook feature can also be used without having to create a course website.

Instructors who access their WebRosters are now able to view not just enrolled students, but also extension students (UCI Access students) and students on the WaitList.

Noteboard is now available for use for every class without requesting a web page. All users can now specify if their posted message is a question, solution, urgent, or class information.

Instructors can now view and configure the mailing list options for all their courses on one screen. It is no longer necessary to log in and log out repeatedly to manage multiple courses, as all the courses are listed and accessible on one page. Changes to mailing list options will continue to take place the following morning.

Printing in Labs

December 7, 1999 by Dana Roode

For the last few years, NACS has managed a pay-for-printing service in its instructional computing labs in an effort to balance printing needs with the inevitable costs of providing that capability. This service has been so successful (we estimate more than half a million pages will be printed this year) that departments which manage other labs have asked for NACS’ assistance in setting up similar services.

Today, “PayPrint” is available in labs managed by NACS, Information and Computer Science (ICS), Social Sciences, Humanities and the Division of Undergraduate Education’s Instructional Technology Center. There are a total of 20 stations to which users can direct printouts, and the cards needed to pay for and authorize printouts in the system are for sale from vending machines in NACS’ labs in Engineering Gateway and the Humanities Instructional Building, as well as in ICS, Social Sciences, and Humanities.

There is more good news for users of PayPrint! A recent analysis of anticipated costs for the coming year has enabled NACS to reduce the price to $0.10 per page. This will make printing more affordable to students.

Laptop Computer Support in NACS Labs

June 1, 1999 by Dana Roode

NACS has created two “laptop stations” in the NACS Engineering Gateway computing labs where portable computers can be connected to the campus network. Laptops with an appropriate Network Interface Card (NIC) and running current versions of the Microsoft or Macintosh operating systems are supported. Connections are made using the Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) to simplify the process, which is outlined in new NACS documentation:

http://www.nacs.uci.edu/computing/laptops

We have created only two stations for laptops at this time, while we determine support requirements and the level of demand. If the demand warrants it, we will establish laptop positions in other NACS labs, such as the NACS@HIB lab in the Humanities Instructional Building.

Please let us know your experience and interest in using this new facility.

NACS Electronic Educational Environment Staffing Update

October 28, 1998 by Dana Roode

NACS’ participation in UCI’s Electronic Educational Environment is once again in full swing after a series of staffing challenges earlier in the year. Shohreh Bozorgmehri, NACS’ principal EEE coordinator, has returned from a few months away on maternity leave. Eric Friedman and Leonard Megliola, who left to accept jobs in the commercial sector, have been replaced by Eric Carter and David Baskin.

Eric, a former NACS student staff member, joins NACS once again after a year working for the UCI school of Humanities. Eric is EEE’s system administrator and helps support EEE Web tools. He is currently working on a pilot program with other EEE team members to evaluate the “WebCT” web course software.

David Baskin joins NACS from USC-Wrigley Institute, where he was their Webmaster. He was previously responsible for the National Academy of Sciences Web site for the Commission on Physical Sciences, Mathematics, and Applications. David is helping plan and teach EEE workshops, providing assistance to instructors, and is participating in the enhancement of the EEE Web site to improve usability and functionality.
