Google Apps for UCI

January 5, 2011 by John Mangrich

Google Apps

Google Apps

UCI is among many Universities now partnered with Google to provide email and collaborative online tools to students.

Among the tools is a Gmail account linked to the student’s UCInetID, thus providing the familiar Gmail interface for a student’s official university communication, with the ability to link that account to other Gmail identities, or to form groups with other UCI students.  While UCI students continue to have access to the same email system used by faculty and staff, UCI Gmail may be more familiar or better suit their needs.

Google Apps for UCI includes other useful tools for students which foster a sense of belonging to the UCI community and promoting collaborative work, including Google Docs (productivity tools analogous to Office), Google Sites (for creating Web sites), Google Talk (instant messaging), and Google Calendar (for keeping track of schedules, appointments, and campus events.)

More information may be found at the Google Apps for UCI web site.

Broadcast E-mail to Students

March 23, 2001 by Dana Roode

With the support of the UCI Registrar, Network & Academic Computing Services provides a service to facilitate the distribution of academic information to large sets of UCI students. The “Student Electronic Broadcast System” (SEBS) provides mailing lists and delivery mechanisms to reach various categories of students.

With SEBS, authorized personnel can send e-mail to all students within a major, all students within a year (e.g. all sophomores), and several other useful categories. Lists are dynamically maintained using official UCI Registrar enrollment data so that schools and departments do not have to maintain and update their own lists.

The broadcast system was developed based on input from the campus, to meet academic information dissemination needs. More information can be found at http://www.nacs.uci.edu/computing/sebs/

Student E-mail Frequency of Use

June 12, 1998 by Dana Roode

For those who use it, e-mail is such a regular and essential part of everyday communications that one wonders how one ever did without it and just how many others are using it regularly. The principal channel for undergraduate e-mail activities at UCI is NACS’ EA (Educational Access) system.

During the last week of Winter Quarter 1998, just over 13,000 different students used the EA system. Broken down on by academic unit (and excluding those units with only graduate programs) usage ranged between 82% (in the School of the Arts) and 92% (in Social Sciences) of total student enrollment. Across all academic units with undergraduate programs, the number of students accessing the EA system in the tenth week of Winter quarter represented 85% of total student enrollment.
