Web-based File Sharing

November 7, 2003 by Dana Roode

Network & Academic Computing Services is proud to announce our new Webfiles service. Webfiles enables UCI faculty and staff to share electronic information (files) among themselves and with their non-UCI colleagues using a familiar Web interface. You can maintain your file storage via Web browser or by creating a folder (directory) on your desktop Windows, Macintosh, or Unix system using the “WebDAV” protocol. You can also create a “ticket” that can be e-mailed to allow conditional access to files by others.

To begin using Webfiles, visit http://webfiles.uci.edu and select the “Create new account” link. An e-mail message will be sent to your UCI address containing a Webfiles ticket to create your account. Click on the link in the e-mail message (or cut and paste it into your browser) to create your account, and you can then access 1 Gigabyte of shareable file space using your UCInetID and password.

Webfiles enables you to set access permissions, including making files public, available only to UCI affiliates, available only to a group you define, or available to no one except when you e-mail someone a ticket.

One good use for Webfiles is in place of large e-mail attachments. You will find detailed instructions on the various Webfiles features on the Webfiles home page or at http://www.nacs.uci.edu/webfiles/docs/documentation.html

Please be mindful of UCI policies and Copyright Law when choosing what materials to share on this service. Also, please do not use the WebDAV option except on a system you have exclusive control over.

Please direct your comments and questions to the NACS Response Center (824-2222, nacs@uci.edu).

Improved Activation Web Page

October 31, 2003 by Dana Roode

Many network services are accessible using your campus network identity — your UCInetID. New staff and students use the “Activate” system to initialize their UCInetID and choose a password. Now, the system has been updated to make activation easier. In particular, the process for recovering from a forgotten password is now much simpler.

The previous system required users to negotiate several web pages. Now, all the required prompts are on a single web page, in four sections.

The first section is used to enter personal identification information. The second section permits you to select your UCInetID password. The third section is a new feature, called the Password Reset Question and Answer. By using this feature, you can reset your UCInetID password if it is lost or forgotten. (Previously, it was necessary to come to NACS with a picture ID.) The final section requires users to agree to the UCI Computer and Network Use Policy.

If an error occurs trying to validate the information, or if the password does not meet the required guidelines, then the user is returned to the same page with an error message indicating the problem. All other data entered is restored to avoid re-typing.

To access the activation system and password changers, go to http://activate.uci.edu/

Introduction to Academic Computing

October 3, 2003 by Dana Roode

NACS and the EEE partners held an orientation program on September 24 for new faculty and their staff.

Presentations by NACS staff covered the range of services NACS provides to faculty and staff. Presentations by staff from the Libraries, the Division of Undergraduate Education, and the Registrar’s office completed the program.

Faculty and presenters also had an opportunity to talk one on one regarding individual needs and opportunities for support.

The powerpoint slides from the NACS presenters are available at http://www.nacs.uci.edu/org/documents/IAC2003-PPT-PresentationSlides.ppt

Faculty Instructional Web Site Award

October 3, 2003 by Dana Roode

NACS’s Instructional Web Technologies (IWT) congratulates Professor Ann Van Sant for receiving the Web Site of the Year award!

Professor Van Sant, from English & Comparative Literature, was awarded the 2003 Web Site of the Year award on May 29, 2003 at the annual “Celebration of Teaching” awards ceremony conducted by the Division of Undergraduate Education.

The award was presented to Professor Van Sant by Shohreh Bozorgmehri, Manager of IWT.

Professor Van Sant has carefully created extraordinarily rich Web sites for her students. Her English 102B, Restoration and Revolution, which is a requirement for English majors, covers the forty-year period from 1660, the restoration of the British monarchy, to 1700, the decade after the “Glorious Revolution.”

The Web site offers visual images of gorgeous paintings to illustrate the subject matter. It brings wealth of electronic information, resources, links and materials to her students at the click of a mouse for those who need a little more.

NACS awarded her $1000 toward the purchase of computer hardware, equipment, and software products in support of teaching with technology.

You may see Professor Van Sant’s award-winning Web Site at: http://eee.uci.edu/02f/21444/
