You may now use the UCI news server (news.service.uci.edu) from non-UCI hosts using your UCInetID and password. Among other things, this means you can now access all UCI newsgroups when dialing up from commercial Internet Service Providers (ISPs) such as Netcom and PacBell. Most news readers have a configuration option for a username and password; enter your UCInetID and password there to gain full UCI Newsgroup access.

NACS News Survey Results
We recently surveyed readers regarding this electronic newsletter to gain some feedback and find ways to improve it. Of the 77 respondents, 91% found NACS-News to be “useful”, 74% have read most of the articles, and 82% felt the article length was about right. The most popular 1996 articles were “NACS Service Summary”, “NACS’ Response Center Help Desk”, “Computing and Communication Service Upgrades and Enhancements”, and “Alternatives for Modem Users”.
Here are some comments that we received:
"...The newsletter serves as an excellent tool for NACS to keep in touch with everyone on campus, and to provide information through one source rather than numerous listservs. Keep up the good work!""I would like to know more about NACS' vision of the electronic future of the Irvine campus. Just where do we expect to be 5 years from now? ... I have a feeling that there are BIG changes out there."
"...This publication is a much needed and welcome one. I enjoy learning about how NACS is structured, and who I can call upon for help in a specific area..."
Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond, we appreciate your input and will strive to deliver the information you need. If you have further or future comments, do not hesitate to send them to us via our NACS@UCI.EDU e-mail address.
NACS Operations, We’re Always Ready When You Are!
It’s 3am and somehow you just can’t sleep, what to do?
Well, if the late, late movie does not appeal to you, what about finishing up your computer assignment or making some progress on that Web research you are doing for your next class session? Just do it! You don ‘t need to wait until daybreak, the NACS Operators are ready when you are, keeping UCI’s central computing and communication systems up and running. Other than the Campus police, NACS Operations is the only department on Campus open 24 hours a day, 7 days per week! Operators even carry a portable phone when walking around the labs to ensure they won’t miss your call!
Dialing (949) 824-6065 assures computer users of reaching a real person, not an abstract voice-mail system. Computer operators wear many hats; we sell print-cards and diskettes, |
|
we keep the laser printers going, we help students, faculty and staff with their computer questions, we handle after-hour network problems and page technical personnel when needed. We also do mundane (but critical!) things like backing up files for NACS’ DDCS clients while they sleep!
Sometimes we won’t be able to immediately solve your problem, but rest assured, we’ll point you in the right direction, or perhaps, just perhaps, we’ll tell you to go back to sleep and call us in the morning!
NACS STAFFING NEWS
Duncan Phillips
Duncan Phillips has joined NACS Departmental and Distributed Computing Support (DDCS) as a system administrator, responsible for support of Electrical and Computer Engineering as well as some Civil Engineering and Physics clients. Duncan worked for NACS as he was completing his undergraduate degree here at UCI, and has demonstrated a rare combination of technical skill, quickness at learning, and warm interpersonal skills. We are happy to welcome him to the group.
Duncan replaces Sinclair Fleming, who has left NACS for a job in the communications industry.
Rick Colman
Rick Colman comes to us as part of a special arrangement with Dave Schetter and University/Industry Research and Technology (UIRT). Rick has been employed for several years as a highly skilled designer and engineer of commercial World Wide Web sites, and will be plying his skills on behalf of the UC-ACCESS project. UC-ACCESS is a UCOP-sponsored effort at UCI to communicate information about UC faculty research and UC programs which could be of use to California business and industry as part of UCOP’s technology transfer program.
Kim Carpenter
Kim Carpenter has joined the NACS’ Business Office as an Administrative Assistant. Kim is no stranger to the UC system, having worked at UC San Diego for 5 years and most recently at UC Riverside. She also worked for the Navy Purchasing department for several years. Kim brings lots of good administrative expertise with her, and we are glad to have her on board.
