Macromedia Software Demonstrated

January 7, 2005 by Dana Roode

NACS is always on the lookout for opportunities to bring technical expertise and demonstrations of useful tools and solutions to campus.

Last month, Sylvia Bass coordinated a presentation from Macromedia for campus Web developers. Jaimi Groothuis and John Schuman of Macromedia showed their content management software, “Contribute.” Contribute is an easy-to-use, full-featured web site management package which costs much less than similarly versatile alternatives. Participants included staff from Adcom, Parking, Humanities, ICS, Engineering, Biological Sciences, Housing, Department of Undergraduate Education, Campus Recreation, and Communications.

Attendees were treated to an in-depth tour of Contribute and their Web publishing system. John also demonstrated two new software packages. Macromedia Captivate allows you to record all onscreen actions to create interactive tutorials. He also showed us Breeze, a tool to have online meetings or training courses over the Internet using Powerpoint and Flash.

If you missed this demonstration and would like to learn more, or if there are other technology companies or products you would like us to invite to UCI, please contact NACS.

Radio Systems Specialist

October 15, 2004 by Dana Roode

Brian Chrisman

Brian Chrisman

In 2002, Network and Academic Computing Services (NACS) created the Radio Systems Specialist position, in order to better serve our clients. The new position consolidated management of the 800MHz radio system and cellular carriers’ cell sites on campus, responsibilities which at that time were shared among several NACS staff. Brian Chrisman was hired to fill the new position.

Brian was previously employed by the Motorola vendor that maintains the radio infrastructure on campus. He was able to transition into the new position quickly because of prior experience with UCI’s 800MHz radio system.

Brian has diverse responsibilities, but some key ones are:

  • 800 MHz radio system administration, vendor coordination, performance analysis, and system maintenance/upgrades.
  • Customer service, analysis of campus radio needs for daily operations and emergency use, communications consulting, and radio training for campus departments.
  • Assessment of need for additional cell sites on campus with campus administration. Coordination with all responsible parties for planning and construction of sites.

Brian Chrisman is available on campus Monday through Friday. He can be reached at (949) 824-8151 or bchrisma@uci.edu for assistance with campus radio communications.

Please visit the radio area on the NACS web page at http://www.nacs.uci.edu/network/ for additional information.

TechnoExpo is Coming

August 20, 2004 by Dana Roode

AdCom Services and NACS remind you to plan to attend the UCI Technology Exposition (TechnoExpo) which will be held at the Bren Events Center on Tuesday September 14, 2004, from 10am to 3pm.

At the Expo you can find representatives from a wide range of UCI departments, describing and demonstrating technologies and services designed to promote the research, instructional, and administrative activities of the University.

This year, TechnoExpo will be held jointly with the Small Business Fair sponsored by UCI Materiel Management, so you’ll be able to meet representatives from many companies which provide popular hardware, software, technology services, and supplies to UCI.

More information is available on the web at:

http://www.technoexpo.uci.edu

As always, there is no charge to attend TechnoExpo. Also, this year lunch will be provided for attendees that register in advance. Early registration has ended, so registration is on a first-come first-served basis. Shuttle service will be available to and from the Bren Center on the day of the Expo.

Central Computing and Security

February 14, 2004 by Dana Roode

NACS has merged its network security activities into the Central Computing Services group, which has been renamed Central Computing and Security (CCS). UCI’s Network Security Coordinator Mike Iglesias, and network security staff member John Lenning, are now a part of CCS. John Mangrich has also been reassigned to the group, and serves as CCS Manager.

In addition to UCInet network security duties, CCS designs and operates UCI’s central computing services, including the “EA” system for undergraduates, “gradEA” for graduate students, “E4E” for faculty and staff, “Orion” (enhanced services for faculty and staff), USENET news service, campus FTP service, and the server hosting UCI’s web site.

Other staff in CCS are:

  • Joseph Farran, Cluster Architect
  • Ted Gielow, UNIX Systems Administrator and Lead Programmer
  • David Mussoff, UNIX Systems Administrator
  • Minh Vo, UNIX Systems Administrator
  • John Ward, Enterprise Services Architect

Garrett Hildebrand continues his role as NACS Network Planner, and is currently working with Cal(IT)2 to address their leading-edge research network needs.
